Ruthenium iridium titanium electrode is a DSA/MMO coated electrode based on titanium and coated with precious metal oxides such as ruthenium iridium on the surface. It has good conductivity, electrocatalytic activity, and corrosion resistance. In the fields of industrial circulating cooling water, wastewater treatment, and water disinfection, ruthenium iridium titanium electrodes can achieve water quality regulation, sterilization, and algae removal through electrochemical reactions, and are an important component of electrochemical water treatment systems.
1、 Principle of Ruthenium Iridium Titanium Electrode Electrochemical Water Treatment
Electrochemical water treatment technology mainly utilizes external current to drive the anode and cathode to undergo redox reactions. Ruthenium iridium titanium electrodes are usually used as anodes to promote the reaction of chloride ions and other substances in water through electrocatalysis, generating active substances with oxidizing ability, thereby inhibiting microbial growth and assisting in the removal of some pollutants.
At the same time, a reduction reaction of water occurs on the cathode surface, producing hydrogen gas and hydroxide ions, causing a local increase in pH near the electrode. When water contains components such as calcium, magnesium ions, and bicarbonate ions, it may form deposits such as calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide, thereby achieving a certain degree of electrochemical softening and descaling.

2、 Electrochemical descaling principle of ruthenium iridium titanium electrode
During the electrolysis process, the cathode undergoes a reduction reaction, allowing water molecules to gain electrons and generate hydrogen gas and hydroxide ions. As the pH value near the cathode increases, the chemical equilibrium between calcium, magnesium ions, and related anions in the water changes.
Among them, when the corresponding conditions are met, calcium ions can combine with carbonate ions to form calcium carbonate deposits; Magnesium ions may combine with hydroxide ions to form magnesium hydroxide deposition. These substances gradually adhere to the surface of the cathode and can be removed from the water body through regular cleaning, thereby reducing the hardness of the water and minimizing the risk of scaling in heat exchange equipment and circulation pipelines.
It should be noted that calcium and magnesium ions are not simply adsorbed onto the cathode by an electric field. The actual deposition process mainly depends on the local pH value, ion concentration, and solution saturation state.
3、 Electrochemical sterilization and algae removal principle of ruthenium iridium titanium electrode
In water containing chloride ions, ruthenium iridium titanium anodes can promote the oxidation reaction of chloride ions, generating chlorine and subsequent active chlorine substances such as hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite salts. Among them, hypochlorous acid has strong oxidation ability, which can destroy the structure of microbial cells and key biomolecules, inhibit bacterial reproduction, and achieve disinfection effect.
In addition, other active oxidants may also be generated during the electrochemical reaction process. These substances can participate in microbial inactivation and the oxidative decomposition of some organic pollutants. By reasonably controlling the current, electrolysis time, and water conditions, the risk of bacterial, algal, and biofouling growth in the circulating cooling water system can be reduced.
4、 The application value of ruthenium iridium titanium electrode
The ruthenium iridium titanium electrode combines electrochemical oxidation and cathodic deposition processes, and can be applied to industrial circulating water treatment, cooling water systems, some industrial wastewater treatment, and electrochemical disinfection equipment. Its advantages lie in stable electrode structure, good electrocatalytic performance, and the ability to select corresponding coatings based on water quality and treatment targets.
The actual operating effect depends on the water quality composition, chloride ion concentration, current density, pH value, temperature, and equipment design. For chlorine containing water bodies, it is also necessary to reasonably control the amount of active chlorine produced to avoid unnecessary by-products.
